Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
